Nolan the Ninja is releasing a batch of wonderfully retro-feeling-golden-era beats called “lo-fi loops”. These instant classic sounds are available NOW. Nolan is one of the smartest, most humble and focused MC’s that I’ve ever worked with. As soon as I heard the dirty-cassette-style-drums he used on the beat tape, I knew exactly what visuals would be appealing to see along with the beat. I chose to shoot with my Panasonic Mini-DV format video recorder. I think the technology is from the 90’s…But when Nolan asked me to work with him I was already on board. I’ve heard his raps before, but never knew he was so strong on the beats. Some people can’t get with that, but all my most favorite hip hop connoisseurs are both producers and rappers (Black Milk, JayDee, RedPill, the list goes on..). Some people get all bugged out if their favorite rapper is also a producer, or vice-versa. To me, it just shows how strong their love is for hip hop and rap culture. And they can really become a force in the “rap” world, using their own original beats and not somebody else’s….
But on this casual day, I tagged along with Nolan and his homies to give you a glimpse at “a day in the life”. I’m glad to have such a big part in the “lo-fi loops” project. I also shot the cover art. You can see it all below. It’s easy and more prosperous to both parties when you can work with such a bright mind, and talented individual such as Nolan. He’s willing to do the small things- the details that matter big!
